The Fiber Company

We Make Hand Knitting Yarns that Delight and Inspire!

The Fibre Co.’s story began in 2003 in an old warehouse on the working waterfront of Portland, Maine, USA with a small spinning mill, lots of raw natural fibre and owner/founder Daphne Marinopoulos’ vision of creating yarns that she couldn’t find on the retail shelves. From these humble beginnings to today’s global brand now based in the United Kingdom, we work with a variety of producers and artisans to continue creating yarns that delight and inspire the enthusiast maker.

Cumbria Fingering

United Kingdom/Argentina
US 1-3• 26-30 stitches/4 inches • 328 yards •60% merino wool, 30% masham wool and 10% mohair. Care: Gently hand wash colours separately in cool water.

Carrying on with the success of the original worsted weight of Cumbria, we developed this fingering weight version with the same nod to the mood, light and places that characterise the North West of the United Kingdom. The brown wool from English Masham is blended with a fine Mohair from Argentina that adds strength, lustre and warmth. These two fibres are blended with a fine South American Merino to give the final yarn the softness and beautiful hand that defines The Fibre Co. yarns. Fabrics knit from Cumbria Fingering are perfect for lighter weight garments and accessories alike

Cumbria Worsted

United Kingdom/Argentina
US 6 - 8 • 18 -20 stitches/inch • 238 yards • 60% Merino wool, 30% masham wool and 10% mohair. Care: Gently hand wash colours separately in cool water.

In celebration of her move to England, our founder, Daphne, developed this yarn to be evocative of the mood, light and places that characterise the North West of the United Kingdom. Cumbria is a classic worsted weight yarn in saturated colours inspired by the lakes and hills. In combining the brown wool from English Masham with a fine Mohair from Argentina, a strength, lustre and warmth is produced that is ideal for handmade staples. These two fibres are blended with a fine South American Merino to give the final yarn the softness and beautiful hand that defines The Fibre Co. yarns. Fabrics knit from Cumbria are made for long walks across sheep-grazed fells and valleys or a homebody’s favourite sweater.

Luma

United Kingdom
US 5 - 6 • 21 -23 stitches/inch • 137 yards • 50% Merino wool, 25% organic cotton, 15% linen, 10% silk. Care: Gently hand wash colours separately in cool water.

A classic DK weight yarn, Luma is inspired by the mood and light found in mid-latitude savannas—those grassland ecosystems with open canopies allowing plenty of sunlight. Daily life in mid-latitude climates, whether in the drier Mediterranean or temperate Great Plains of the USA, is best handled with a layered approach to clothing. Plant-based fibres mixed with silk and wool provide a built-in layer of warmth in winter yet lightness when required in warmer temperatures. The Luma palette includes soft neutrals and bright shades of pink, blue and green.

Meadow

United Kingdom
US 1 -3 • 32–36 stitches/inch • 545 yards • 40% Merino wool, 25% baby llama, 20% silk, 15% linenCare: Gently hand wash colours separately in cool water. We recommend alternating hanks as you work to give an overall blended appearance.

Be they coastal, wooded or alpine, meadows are important ecosystems housing local fauna and serving as a fertile growing ground for flora of many varieties. Usually filled with grasses and other non-woody plants, the theme of lightness is everywhere in a meadow. What better name for a lace weight yarn? Meadow is the perfect lace weight yarn, spun with The Fibre Co.’s trademark blend of luxury fibres with a touch of rustic. Combining four of the most luxurious fibres—baby llama, fine merino wool, silk and linen—this 2 ply yarn is slightly heavier than a typical lace weight yarn. It is a versatile yarn that works well on a variety of needle sizes and a wide array of projects. The crisp hand and stitch definition of linen with the sheen of silk is perfectly complimented by the softness of baby llama and fine merino. A yarn for fibre lovers who like a treat on the needles and for their favourite handmades.

Tundra

United Kingdom
US 10 - 11 / 12 - 14  stitches/inch • 120 yards • 60% baby alpaca, 30% Merino wool, 10% silkCare: Gently hand wash colours separately in cool water. We recommend alternating hanks as you work to give an overall blended appearance.
