FAQs RE: KALs

Dearest Yarn Baristas:  What is a KAL?

KAL is short for Knit-A-Long. It's a way to be part of a friendly group of people working on the same project. They are perfect in our shop setting since we are quite fond of the "gather" concept. Many KALs happen within the Ravelry community and become gigantic groups of folks who interact virtually on their respective Ravelry KAL pages. We like to start our shop KALs with a group gathering to share tips/technique hints about the project, and let everyone who's joining share progress on a Facebook group page, and meet in shop to work away together if you want. Or you can stop by any time for quick questions, to show off your project, or simply to knit for a bit.

Yo, Yarn Baristas:  What KALs are happening at Yarn Bar this winter?

We are kicking off the New Year with participation in the Log Cabin-a-Long that the lovely Fringe Association folks are leading. Gather with Yarn Bar friends on January 6 to get going on building your log cabin. And on January 27, we will begin our next KAL with the Breathing Space Sweater workshop in the afternoon.

Dear Yarn Baristas:  Can I join a KAL after the official start date?

Of course you can. We'll happily get you going.

Hey Yarn Baristas, I'm a brand new knitter. Is there a KAL for me?

Yes!!! Log Cabin-a-Long! You can plan a washcloth, grow it into a pillow, a blanket, a rug, create a mohair wrap.....The Log Cabin that we love utilizes only the knit stitch. You can use any yarn that your heart desires (keep it to the same weight), so we also love that level of creativity. It is modular construction, and you will get great practice at picking up stitches, a useful skill for future knitting projects.

Help me Yarn Baristas! I am buried under a giant stash of leftover wool.

We suggest the Log Cabin-A-Long as a charming way to create a blanket or set of throw pillows. We would love to help you plan it out! We'll talk about that on the 6th or you are welcome to stop by any time to pick our brains.

Hello Yarn Baristas, I have never knit a sweater. Would the Breathing Space KAL be a good thing to participate in?

Yes, it would be! The Breathing Space sweater is top-down raglan sleeve style construction, which is nice and easy to do once it's all set up. The cool asymmetrical A-line body on this sweater happens with short row shaping, and we will spend time at the workshop practicing short rows!
