Knock Out Some Knockers

Knock Out Some Knockers

Posted by Linda Heins on

It's that time of year, ladies. Linda and Sue's mothers both have battled breast cancer, and it has impacted many of our friends and customers. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month we discuss the Knitted Knockers organization and how we are affiliated with them, and we share an American Cancer Society recipe that Sue has made nearly once a week for about 15 years.

I

Knitted Knockers is a non-profit organization based in Bellingham WA that provides countless knockers free of charge to women around the world. Soft, lightweight, and huggable, these seem to be a preferred alternative to traditional prosthetics. We registered the shop with the Knockers Organization as a drop off point for shipping knockers to be distributed. We've got a nice collection gathering to ship out and we'll be mailing them unstuffed for practical reasons.

We researched the approved yarn list as we were deciding what yarns to bring in for our shop. While at Market in June, we learned that the reason for such as specific yarn list is to provide the softest material to post-mastectomy wounds. Donated knockers that are not made with approved yarns are discarded! So we stock Bamboo Pop, which is approved for either knitted or crocheted knockers, and Cotton Glace, approved for knitted knockers.

The knittedknockers.org website has downloadable patterns or you can get one from us. On Thursday evening October 26 we will gather here at the shop to work on them as a group ("Knock Out a Knocker After You Knock Off Work").

Finished unstuffed knockers brought to the shop will always receive a coupon from us to be used on a future purchase.

That recipe? It's for Cream of Broccoli Soup, made without cream. Sue thinks her kids secretly liked it, although there were always complaints when they were younger. There are many similar recipes out there of course, and I've morphed it some over the years, sometimes adding cayenne pepper or other seasonings, but it's essentially written here as it was in the original format I got from my mom back when she was working at the American Cancer Society headquarters. We wish you good health.
